In 2024, Ian Gabriel’s Death Of A Whistleblower premiered at TIFF and was honoured with the Best African Film Award at the 6th Joburg Film Festival. In 2023, Runs In The Family received the Best South African Film Award at the Durban International Film Festival and was an Outstanding Film Nominee for the 35th GLAAD Film Awards in Los Angeles and New York. Four Corners, South Africa’s Official Submission for Best Foreign Film at the 86th Academy Awards, went on to receive multiple Best Film awards on the international and local festival circuitsm, and in 2004 Ian’s directorial debut Forgiveness won the Best South African and Best African Film accolades in the same year.

In a remote desert town in South Africa, imagination and a knack for fashioning tin cans and scrap metal into dream cars fuels a group of teenage kids’ passion to race in the Philipstown Wire Car Grand Prix, the only race of its kind in the world. Here, teenagers race wire cars over wild rocky terrain for a gruelling 3 km, each battling for the medal that will make them a town champion. Spotlighting the artistry and ingenuity behind the wire cars, the film affirms the dignity, creativity, and resilience of the children of Philipstown.
