He began his career as a documentary photographer, capturing subcultures across South Africa’s youth landscape, a foundation that continues to inform his cinematic language. His work is defined by an inventive, immersive visual style that blends documentary authenticity with a heightened, poetic sensibility.

Ward’s breakthrough film for African surf brand Mami Wata, Luck is Alive, earned international recognition, winning the Award for Visual Style at the AICP Awards and a Wood Pencil for Direction at the D&AD Awards.

His 2025 film The Philipstown WireCar Grand Prix has further cemented his reputation as a leading voice in a new wave of hybrid documentary storytelling.
